Today was the most beautiful day we have had yet! One of the guys we met over the weekend, Lachie but sounds like Lucky, messaged me in the morning asking if I wanted to got for a swim. Um, let me think... duh, of course I want to go for a swim. I texted Lianna and we got our stuff ready to go. Lachie picked us up and we headed to the beach. When we got there Lachie asked if I wanted to swim out to the buoy. I laughed and asked how far it was. He said 200 meters. I said why not.
There is a little yellow speck... that is the buoy. There was a ton of wrack washed up on shore and in the ocean (very gross feeling).
It was a good swim out to the buoy. When we got there we looked at all the species of algae and limpets that were attached. Of course, on the bottom of the buoy was the Rodophyte that we had to find for our species guide. I just let it be and we headed back for shore. By the time we got back I was sweating in my 4 mm wetsuit (first time ever!). Lachie and I got our wetsuits off and rinse them so they would be dry by the time we left. Lianna, Jill, and Jacob (Bucket) then went on a swim to the buoy.
I taught Lachie some new ways to throw the frizbee while we watched them swim in. Then it was ultimate time! Jill wanted to play and we only had four people playing. What the heck... 2 on 2. It was a lot of fun but very hard running on sand. By the time we were done, I was cover in sand and we were all out of breath.
Time to go back in the ocean!
We found some cool things along the way.
After the beach we went into town quick then back to uni for some free pizza. While we were eating there was an African music and dance group doing a demonstration on the quad. I joined in... it was a lot of fun!
Lianna and I wondered back to the dorms and started looking for people. We ran into her friend Mitch who was heading down to the beach. He said we could join him. And we did. He wanted to surf but the ocean was too calm so we headed down to the break wall to jump off. When we first got there I saw the seal that lives in the small harbor. I was very excited but no one believed me. There were two places to jump off of. One wall at about 3m and the other at 9m here are the views.
The water was so cold when you hit! Jumping off of the break wall is a sort of initiation to Warrnambool. As everyone took their turns jumping another individual showed up.
We headed back to uni to relax for awhile after that. I got to finally talk to Eric for awhile. Then I headed to netball tryouts. Netball is the girls club sport on campus. I figured I would try it out. I read up on it yesterday and watched a few games on youtube. It is non-contact, no-bounce basketball without a backboard. One of the girls gave me a ride to the outdoor stadium they were at. I was soooo nervous. When I got there the coach asked me for my info and my position. I told I had never played before. She laughed and said well we will see then. The first position I got stuck in was goal keeper. I learned very quickly that is not my position. First of all, I am short. Second of all, I have no idea what being a meter away means. To block a shot you have to be a meter away with your feet before you can put your arms up. I got the whistle blown at me almost every time. I still had had a good few blocks and interceptions though. Then I had a short break and one of the girls was talking to me and said "you need to be running, you are fast." So when the coach came over and asked what positions we would like to try next, the girl volunteered me for center. I just started laughing and said I don't know about that. The coach on the other hand thought that was a good idea. So I played center. I liked it a lot more. I could run up and down the court passing it across the thirds. When we were done a lot of the girls came up to me and said I did a really nice job. One of them said, "we will make you a good Aussie." Either way it was a lot of fun and I will be going again later in the week. The girls said they would help practice a little too.
When I got back I ate some food and hung out with my housemates. Tonight's activity was an outdoor movie on the quad. Guess what movie... Space Jam. One of my housemates and I walked over together and got popcorn and fairy floss (cotton candy). It was a lot of fun!
When we got back all of the girl housemates hung out and talked. Sam, the only guy in the house, was already in his room. Sam likes us girls because we are clean. I really appreciate it too! All the people in my house are very kind and are fun to talk to.
It was a great day to be in Australia!
