Sunday and St. Patrick's Day

March 18th, 2014

Sunday

After a fun filled Saturday night, I didn't get to sleep in because church was at 9. Ben was very kind and picked me up. It had been raining off and on all morning and was still raining a little bit when we were heading into town. Everything was perfect for a rainbow.

As we got closer to church we got closer to the end of the rainbow. There was no gold, just a light post.

After the church service we stuck around for scones (pronounced scauns) and teas. I was told I was saying scones too properly. We have a pastry chef in the congregation so I was required to try the scones. They were very good. A former pastor of the church also came up and talked to me. He asked me about the synods back home and laughed when I said I was WELS. His hobby in retirement is to look at scripture and the roles women played in the early church. He has written a few papers and submitted them to some prestigious place that I can't remember. Women in the church in Australia are allowed to vote and he is gathering evidence and support to have women be ordained. It was a very intriguing conversation.

As people began to leave, Ben and I excused ourselves and he took me out for coffee since we were both starting to fall asleep. The place we went to was down by the break wall. I was packed with people eating brunch. We had seats facing the ocean. The surf was very high because of all the storms rolling in. It was very beautiful!

When I got home I was still tired and it started raining so I took a nap. When I woke up I finished up some data analysis for my class and submitted it. Then it was time for tea. Lachie invited me over for "family tea" since most of his roommates were gone. I hitched a ride with Jake and Jill who were also going. We picked up ice cream and gummy snakes for dessert. Lachie made chicken (chook) and veggies. It was very good. Afterwards, it was time for my compulsory lecture in Australia culture. In other words he made me watch the movie "The Castle."

Here is the trailer. He and his other roommate Cal told me this is the classic Australian movie and it defines the culture. To be honest, I really didn't understand it. Lachie told me that that would probably happen but I had to see it anyway. I think I will watch it before I leave to see if it makes anymore sense.

Overall, it was a laid back Sunday.

Monday

St. Patrick's Day

Unlike Whitewater, everyone went to their classes. Most of us only had one class to begin with, which was marine biology. Class was at 2 so I did some cleaning and watched a movie about Paul Kelly. He is Australia's musician. It was another cultural experience requirement Lachie had for me. Then it was off to class for a double lecture. It finished early, so I met with my group and did some homework right after class. Then it was time to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.

We headed over to Sherwood 1 and talked, dance, and hung out until it was time to head to the train. I met a few new people and shared a lot of laughs. Here are some pictures.

 Yep! I'm Irish :)

We caught the train into town and headed to the Sean. It is the local Irish pub so of course they were open. Another thing that is different than Whitewater... only one bar was open. On the way there, Aiden gave us a tour of his old house in town. When we arrived at the Sean it was filled with mostly uni kids. There were some older adults as well. We spent the night dancing and laughing. There was also a live band that was playing on and off the whole night. They did a lot of Australian music, which was very cool because usually they are just playing American music. A group of us ventured home early-ish because of class and group projects that we were working on in the morning. I had so much fun! It was the best St. Patrick's Day ever!

Today (Tuesday)

I don't have class at all today, so it is a project/ homework day. Nothing exciting, just being a normal uni student. I might go do my homework outside since it is so beautiful out! I may end up going surfing later... who knows!
