Rough Day

May 6th, 2014

Today started off alright. In the morning I worked on homework and was able to catch up with a few people back home. Right before class, however, grades were post for our group assignment. It was not even close to what I expected to be. My group was pretty upset about the grade especially for all the work we put into it. Finding out before a long lab class didn't help any either.

For lab we looked at how our algae babies were doing.
 Lots o' babies

Crazy lookin' baby

One of our only unfertilised eggs

Then we had a few other experiment we had to do for lab. After being beaten down by the day's events team America did pull out for a win. We had the largest temperature difference in our tank out of both classes. An awesome 13 degrees Celsius! We were testing how zooplankton reacted to temperature differences and since water is denser when it was colder we had to layer the water without mixing it too much. Evan and Chris did an awesome job carefully funnelling the cold water in!

Here is the winning tank! Team America- Liann, Chris, Evan and Me.

After lab we were all pretty upset still. I messaged Lachie to get advice about it since he has already taken the class. He ended up picking me up from Uni to help me unwind a bit. On the way out though, I met the Deakin koala.

Lachie told me to "put a smile on"

Can't help but smile because she is so cute!

Ms. Koala and stared at each other for awhile until it started raining harder and Lachie and I left.

Lachie ended up taking me to the mouth of the Hopkins river overlooking the ocean. I laughed, cried, and let out all my frustrating. Lachie passed on some words of wisdom about how university works down in Australia. Then we walked down to the river to see if we could see any eels. We didn't but there was this...

 The view fit my mood

Lachie insisted I come with him for dinner. We went over to Jared and Jahzeel's house. They are a newly married couple that Lachie knows from Deakin. They were both so welcoming even though we had not met before. Jahzeel cooked an amazing curry dinner for us and Jared taught us a new card game. Jared and Jahzeel are such a beautiful and loving couple! I was so thankful to them and Lachie for inviting me to dinner. It was exactly what I needed after a not so great day.

When I got back to uni, Nick had his own way of making me laugh at the situation. I am truly blessed to have friends here that are my home away from home. Lachie made a good point. He said to me, "Your family is on the other side of the world... somebody has to look out for you!" It is days like these that I realise just how far away from home  I am. But these are also the days that I realise how blessed I am to be surrounded by people with such good hearts!
