Fishing Day

October 30, 2014

It was fishing day! Ben came and picked us up fairly early in the morning to take us to his neighbours house where we all met up. Our first task was to get bait for fishing.  We went down to the mouth of the Hopkins river and “pumped for bait.” We used corers to get mussels and prawns. Dad got suited up in chest waders while I just got in my wet suit. It was hard but fun at the same time. Grandpa stayed on shore and helped them to separate the bait. After about 40 minutes we had enough bait for the day. We went back to pick up the boats and then we were off to Port Fairy. On the way we passed some kangaroos so Grandpa got to see some. In Port Fairy we put the boat in at the Moyne river. Steve had everything set up for Grandpa and I to catch some river fish. Dad went with Rob Peach out onto the ocean to fish for squid.  Dad caught a squid within the first couple hours but Grandpa and I didn’t catch a fish. It was around lunch time so we went to get fish and chips. It was very good. We were afraid it was going to be the only fish we would get that day. After lunch, the sea was calm enough for Steve to take his boat out. We didn’t go far but we did start to catch some fish. I caught 4 juvenile pink snapper and Steve caught 2. Grandpa did the best catching 4 juvenile pink snapper and a barracuda. We could only keep the barracuda. Then on the way in grandpa caught a small salmon. It began as a gloomy day but by the time we were pulling the boat back onto shore it was absolutely beautiful. Dad was very excited about catching a squid. He was even more amazed at the squid pen (backbone). He thought I would be more excited but I had seen plenty of them before.  It was still cool though.

 Calamari for dinner

We headed back to Warrnambool and said our good byes then went back to uni to clean up. Dad cooked calamari and salmon for dinner. We had to call in the back ups to help us eat it all (Anthony and Chris). After dinner we relaxed and watched TV. By 9 Dad and Grandpa were sleepy and I had decided I wanted to carve pumpkins for Halloween. Josh, Chris, Anthony, and I headed to the shops to pick out pumpkins. It wasn’t as cool as going to the pumpkin patch, but with this group of boys it was still fun! We got back to uni to start working on our masterpieces. I was trying to make Maleficent for Beck since that was her costume for the Halloween party the next day. It was so much fun carving pumpkins! It was even more exciting that we got Josh to do it! It was an overall great day!!!

Lauren is the best!
